Zinc Chloride

Zinc Chloride has numerous applications in different markets, including pharmaceuticals, health care and paper manufacturing.

Applications and uses of zinc chloride:

• in the chemical industry it is used to manufacture various dyes, intermediate chemicals and solvents  such as ethyl acetate.

• organic product synthesis.

• used as a metal etchant and metallurgical flux.

• used as flux for soldering.

• used to manufacture magnesia cement, which is an active ingredient in dental fillings and mouthwashes.

• used as a mordant in dyeing and printing materials.

• approximate 64% zinc chloride water solution dissolves cellulose, silk, and starch in textiles.

• it is a fire proofing agent and fabric refresher.

• paper soaked in concentrated zinc chloride yields vulcanized fibers.

• one of the three components to prepare color development materials used for pressure-sensitive copying papers and thermo-sensitive recording papers.

• in petroleum industry zinc chloride is a powerful emulsion breaker for separating oil and water.  

• it is used in dry cell battteries as an electrolyte.

• zinc plating, processing, preparing metals to be tin coated, galvanized or soldered.

• in combination with water-soluble alkali metal silicate, is used to coat substrates normally infested by algae, such as concrete roofing tiles and other silicate-containing building materials, to prevent or minimize algal infestation that imparts a dark, unsightly appearance.

• other applications include condensing agent, dehydrating agent, wood preservative, deodorant and disinfectant.

Agriculture: Zinc chloride is an important micronutrient that is used extensively in agriculture. Zinc chloride is a source of zinc and can be further combined with chelating agents to form water soluble solutions that are readily bioavailable for animals and plants. 

Batteries: Zinc Chloride is used as an electrolyte in dry cell batteries.

Galvanizing: Soldering and Fluxes: Zinc chloride is used in galvanizing and welding. Zinc chloride effectively dissolves the dense oxide layer on metal surfaces, which exposes the metal and improves bonding. 

Paints: Zinc chloride is used in the production of dyes as a stabilizer and color developer.

Resins: Zinc chloride as an important catalyst in the manufacturing of Ion - Exchange resins. 

Rubber: Zinc chloride is used as an accelerator in the vulcanization of rubber.

Water Treatment: Zinc chloride is used as an inhibitor of scale and corrosion in water treatment facilities, including drinking water treatment, cooling towers, oil and gas wells.
