Oxalic acid is the simplest dicarboxylic acid and is a reducing agent. This acid is a natural component found in nature within many plants and vegetables such as buckwheat and rhubarb. The conjugate base, oxalate, is a chelating agent for metal cations. Oxalic acid is found naturally in foods, but it can be harmful in larger amounts. Oxalic acid is very dangerous at high doses, but at moderate doses is safe for various useful functions.

Oxalic acid is widely used for cleaning, bleaching, mordant, varroa mite treatment in beehives, and stain-rust remover. It is effective for rust removal due to the formation of a stable water-soluble salt, ferrioxalate ion. Oxalic acid functions as a reducing agent for metal oxides, which is effective in removing tarnish, rust, and ink stains. Oxalic acid has applications as a mordant in the dyeing industry. INSTRUCTIONS
Oxalic acid is suitable for all types of fabrics including cottons, poly cottons, polypoplin, linens, silk, and wool. It is suggested that not more than 10 g/L of oxalic acid be added to warm to hot water to soak for 30 minutes in a basin to remove heavy iron stains in clothing. Then wash the items in your washing machine for a full cycle as normal.

Oxalic acid wash to clean large wooden decks or large wooden siding that do not require deep bleaching should be cleaned with a mixture of 240 gm/L of oxalic acid in warm water. Apply the wash to the wood surface evenly using a sponge and gloves to protect your hands. Be certain to get the wash in trim and corner pieces. After you leave it dry, then remove oxalic acid wash with a clean sponge and copious amounts of clean water to neutralize any acid. For smaller areas it is the same procedure but the mix should be 120 gm/L.

Oxalic acid paste should be made to remove dark stains and watermarks on wooden decks with three parts oxalic acid and one part warm water to create a paste. This paste can be used as a spot treatment but should not be used to cover an entire surface. Work on small areas at a time. Apply the paste to the stained areas with a paintbrush and allow to dry. Once dry remove the oxalic acid paste with a wet sponge. Thoroughly clean and neutralize the deck with water.

To make a Oxalic Acid Hull Cleaner to remove barnacles, deposits, and waterline it is suggested to mix thoroughly 106 gms/L of oxalic acid in warm to hot water so it dissolves easily and then let cool and apply by brush or spray on area to be cleaned, let sit for 2 to 5 minutes and wipe down with copious amounts of water..
