Rochelle salt (Potassium Sodium Tartrate) is a whitish crystalline powder with applications in biochemical assays and diagnostic test, electronics, piezoelectrics, electroplating, silvering of mirrors and as a chemical reagent. Rochelle salts is used in copper plating on zinc diecastings at pH 12.5 to prevent blacken at high current density. Rochelle salt is added to cyanide copper bath as a complexant, modest grain refiner, and to aid in anode corrosion (increase anode solubility) and increase cathode efficiency, which also tends to yield a denser, smoother deposit with greater surface uniformity. It also allows possibility of working at higher current densities. While it facilitates anode solubility it reduces bath voltage, minimizing fluctations in voltage and current, increasing conductivity and throwing power and reduces copper ion concentration to give better quality deposits by eliminating treeing.

Rochelle salts have a large piezoelectric effect, which is electric charge induced by mechanical deformation from pressure or bending. The piezoelectric properties of Rochelle salts are useful in sensitive acoustical and vibrational devices, such as electromechanical transducers, ultrasonic generators, microphones, and electromechanical resonators. Potassium Sodium Tartrate is also used as a reagent to break up emulsions and in the analysis of proteins. Rochelle salts also has application as a laboratory reagent for Fehling solution test (reagent for reducing sugar) and determination of uric acid. It is also used as a retardant for plaster and cement.

Our Rochelle salt under code E-337 complies as a food additive. In the food industry it acts as sequestrant, emulsifier, stabilizier, buffer and antioxidant in cheese products, maragine, jellies, jams, minced meat, and sausages. It is also used in the manufacturing of pectins and gelatins.  In pharmacology it is used as saline cathartics. Also it has been used as a laxative in medicine and for the removal of toxic materials in some cases of poisoning. It has several applications in veterinary labs. It is often used in biochemical assays and diagnostic tests. Rochelle salt is a component of the Biuret reagent, which is used to measure protein concentration in biological samples. It is also a component in Fehling's solution used to detect reducing sugars.
