DI Water is deionized water, which comes in different grades. Tap water is full of mineral ions, which comes from soil, pipes, and other sources. DI Water is typically a purified water that has most of the mineral content and dissolved ions removed, resulting in a liquid that is almost or completely free of ion charges. The charges are referred to as anions and cations in normal water such as: respectively; carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, and sulfates as major anions and aluminum, ammonium, calcium, copper, hydrogen, magnesium, potassium, silver, sodium, tin, iron and zinc as cations just to mention a few. It is sometimes refer to as pure water. The cleanliness of the water is rated as its resistance value. Pure water does not conduct electricity. Electricity is only conducted by the ions in the water, which measures resistivity. The Quality of DI water is measured by resistivity (megohms) or conductivity (microsiemens).

There are three different quality grades of DI Water. Type I Ultra-Pure Water is considered to be greater than 18.2 megohms/cm or less than 0.0555 microsiemens/cm at 25^oC based on the ASTM D1193 Standard. Type I DI Water is used for semiconductor final cleaning, medical devices and applications, and water for infusion. It can be used alongside disinfectants to clean surgical instruments and sterilize surfaces, reducing the risk of patient infection. Ultra-Pure Water meets O-B-41H, the federal specification for battery water in lead batteries. It also meets certified Laboratory Grade DI Water for deep cleaning, cooling, cosmetic, corrosion, and hygiene. Type II Pure Water is considered to be a minimum resistivity of 1 megohms/cm at 25^oC or a maximum conductivity of 1 microsiemens/cm at 25^oC. Type II DI Water is used in many labs for cleaning and food grade products. It is used in cosmetic products that use water, such as soaps, lotions, toothpastes, and lipsticks. It is important that water used in these products is pure, to prevent it from contaminating the product or altering its chemical composition. Type III Purified Water is considered to be a minimum of 4 megohms/cm or a maximum of 0.25 microsiemens/cm at 25^oC. Type III DI Water is used for parts cleaning and general lab cleaning. It is used in factory environment for cooling systems, as well as in anodizing and plating shops. It can be used for lubricating and cooling systems that could overheat aiding to maintain safe or appropriate temperatures. DI water is used in steam irons, fish tanks, humidifiers, and car radiators as well as homemade air freshener. DI Water Type III Purified meets Deionized Water ASTM Type IV-B (D1193-06) aka Reagent Water requirements used in Aerospace applications.
